Comprehensive Final Exam

Questions covering material from both the Gross Anatomy and Embryology course and the Microanatomy and Cell Biology Course will be included on the PIL End-of-Year Comprehensive Exam. Your exam score will not count towards your course grade, but you must pass this exam in order to pass the course. Rules concerning the cut-offs for passing this exam are provided in the PIL Course Policy Document on the PIL website.

Determination of Course Grades

Decisions about the cut-offs for final grades for each course are made after the course has ended. However, the following guidelines will apply:

  • Final averages below 65% are likely to be Unsatisfactory.
  • Averages between 65-70% are likely to receive a Marginal Unsatisfactory.
  • An average of 70% or above will definitely be a passing grade, providing that the cumulative final is also passed.
  • A grade of Highly Satisfactory will only be given to a small number of students who very narrowly miss getting Honors.
  • An average of 90% or better will definitely receive Honors, providing that the cumulative final is also passed. This will not change even if the entire class scores above 90%. If you master 90% or more of the material we present, we feel that you deserve Honors, no matter how many other people do the same.

Remediation

Students who receive a grade of Unsatisfactory (U) or Marginal Unsatisfactory (MU) in either course, and those who pass the course(s) but fail the course(s) comprehensive exam are referred to the Student Promotions Committee for review of their academic record.
If the student has few or no deficiencies in other courses, the deficiencies in the course(s) can usually be remediated as follows:

  • Students who receive a U must take and pass an approved summer course in the failed subject or repeat the course the following year. Remedial summer courses are offered online by our department, and several other medical schools offer residential summer courses.
  • Students who receive an MU and those who pass the course but fail the comprehensive exam must take and pass a written remediation exam. Details about the remediation of the comprehensive exam can be found in the PIL Course Policy Document on the PIL website.
  • A student who fails the remediation exam must take and pass an approved summer course, or repeat the course the following year (see above).
